The philosophy of Georgia Southern University's School of Nursing is congruent with the values and mission of the university. Nursing is a practice discipline which includes both didactic and clinical preparation. Nursing education is based on theory, research, and practice in nursing and other disciplines. The goal of nursing education is to prepare critically thinking, skilled nurses who act to promote, maintain, and restore health through partnership with persons, families, groups, and communities.

Admissions Requirements

To be admitted into this program, a person must meet the following requirements:
1) Bachelor's degree in the proposed field of study (BSN) or its equivalent from a college accredited by the appropriate accrediting association.
2) Current Georgia RN license. Out-of-state students must obtain a Georgia RN license.
3) Prerequisite undergraduate statistics course or a statistically oriented methodology course.
4) Pre-admission interview by nursing faculty.
5) Submission/completion of documentation (College of Graduate Studies online application, Georgia Southern Health Services form, School of Nursing graduate application, Proof of current malpractice liability insurance, Proof of American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification, Three letters of recommendation, School of Nursing Student Health Appraisal form).

Transfer Policies

In addition to coming from a degree-granting, regionally accredited institution, the student must have received a grade of "B" or higher. Also, no credit that was earned over seven years prior to the projected or completion term of the degree the student is pursuing is eligible for consideration. Credits are carefully evaluated by the respective schools/units to ensure comparability to Georgia Southern curricula. These policies are in place to ensure that Georgia Southern recruits academically prepared students capable of achieving success in the University's graduate programs.

Special Program Requirements

REGULAR ADMISSION: Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale) plus one of the following options: 1) Minimum Miller Analogy Test (MAT) of 44; 2) Minimum Verbal 450 and minimum 450 Quantitative or Analytical on Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken prior to October 1, 2002; 3) Minimum Verbal and Quantitative of 450 each and minimum Writing Level of 4 on GRE taken after October 1, 2002.
PROVISIONAL ADMISSION: Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.7 (on 4.0 scale) plus one of the following options: 1) Minimum Miller Analogy Test (MAT) of 36; 2) Minimum Verbal 450 and minimum 350 on Quantitative or Analytical on Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken prior to October 1, 2002; 3) Minimum Verbal and Quantitative of 400 each and minimum Writing Level of 3 on GRE taken after October 1, 2002.

Special Program Prerequisites

An undergraduate level introductory statistics course is needed. To be admitted into this program, an applicant must have graduated from an accredited BSN Program and hold an RN License. If an applicant has an associate degree of nursing and no baccalaureate degree then an RN-MSN option is available.  If an applicant holds an associate degree in nursing and a non-nursing baccalaureate a bridge to the MSN is available. Georgia Southern makes every effort possible to meet the needs of individual students. Please consult with a School of Nursing representative to learn more about the program and how Georgia Southern can accommodate individual needs.

Special Enrollment Issues

RN-MSN offers graduates of associate degree or diploma programs the opportunity to earn both the BSN and MSN degree. Students must meet all the RN-BSN requirements and complete all undergraduate course work (up to 14 semester hours less than RN-BSN students, depending on graduate nursing major). The RN-MSN and Graduate Program Directors work closely to plan the students program of study. Students apply first to the RN-BSN program and then the Graduate program at the appropriate time. Students must gain admission to the College of Graduate Studies in Regular or Provisional status to begin graduate courses. GRE or MAT scores must be available to be admitted.
